APPLY NOW TO BECOME THE UN YOUTH CHAMPION FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND PEACE!


The UN and British Council in Cyprus announced the 'UN Young Champions for Environment and Peace' Programme, which will be held for the third time on 26 and 27 November and 3 and 4 December 2022 (both online and in person in Nicosia).


In light of the COP 27 UN Climate Conference, the Program reiterates the UN Secretary-General's call for urgent action to confront the climate crisis, one of the defining challenges of our time, and aims to support youth and climate and peace activists who demand change and a more peaceful future without inequalities. .


Dynamic young people from all communities living in Cyprus will be able to apply to the exciting program, which will take place over two weekends with online and face-to-face studies. Participants will learn about environmental peacebuilding and climate crisis, climate advocacy and have the opportunity to work with other participants, together with experts, youth activists and trainers from Cyprus and abroad.


Those who complete the program will be able to attend workshops and sessions exclusively for Youth Champion alumni, learn about opportunities to get support to develop initiatives in groups, and connect with local and international organisations, activists and inspiring networks.


If you are between the ages of 18-30 living in Cyprus and you are interested in the program, you can apply now! The program will be run online and in person over two weekends in the Nicosia buffer zone on the following dates:

  • Saturday, November 26

  • Sunday, November 27

  • Saturday, December 3

  • Sunday, December 4

The days when the program will be in person and online will be announced soon.


The deadline for applications is 6 November.


Eligibility criteria:

  • 18-30 years old, from any community living in Cyprus

  • A strong will to make an important contribution to a peaceful and sustainable future on the island

  • Take an interest in and be active in the climate crisis and climate advocacy

  • Commitment and motivation to actively participate throughout the 2-week-long program

  • fluent English

  • Desire to develop interpersonal relationships with participants from all communities living in Cyprus and to work together for a common purpose

  • Desire to learn more about the UN and British Council's work on youth action on the climate crisis and what the UN is doing in Cyprus

  • The call is open to those who have not benefited from previous UN Youth Champions programmes, ***UN Youth Champions graduates will be offered opportunities to develop skills and develop team action in 2023.


No previous experience in environmental peacebuilding, climate crisis, climate advocacy and activism is required.


The program places emphasis on gender diversity and equal representation among young people from all communities living in Cyprus. Seats will be available for persons over the age of 30, subject to availability and interest. Upon request, local transportation options to Nicosia and accommodation options in Nicosia on face-to-face days will be available for those with a travel disability to Nicosia.


What to expect from the program:

The full-time online and face-to-face program will focus on collaborative learning and will include sessions, discussions and workshops taught by experts from the UN and UN agencies in Cyprus and abroad, the British Council, young climate activists from Cyprus and abroad, and group work. In group study sessions, you will get to know other participants better and work together on different challenges with the support of the team.


Participation is mandatory on all days of the program, and participation certificates will be given to those who will attend all days of the program.


Additional events will be held after the end of the program that will be open to all Youth Champions alumni and other youth. These will include workshops on climate advocacy, networking sessions with environmental activists and organizations, and others. Participation in these activities is encouraged but not required. In addition, through other programs, teams can implement and develop actions, receive mentoring, request seed funding, etc. opportunities will be presented.


Note that being part of the Youth Champions initiative does not imply a full-time role or any form of employment by the UN. Participation in the initiative is honorary, free (no UN fees or mandates) and does not require speaking on behalf of the UN or UNFICYP, or UN privileges and immunities for participants.

Program executives aim to inform successful applicants by 14 November. Selected participants will be given a detailed program for the two weekends where the events will take place. More information on additional workshops and opportunities will be announced later. Please note that some program points may change, but dates may change.
