Financial Literacy is Now Included in the Secondary Education Curriculum

As part of the "Accountable Cyprus Financial Literacy Project" Project, 'financial literacy' has been included in the secondary education curriculum.

The "Financial Literacy Education Program," prepared in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, the North Cyprus Banks Association, and KMC Consulting, will begin implementation in 4 pilot schools starting on February 16, 2024.

On February 15, 2024, a promotional event and workshop were organized for teachers at the Grand Pasha Hotel in Nicosia to introduce the training program, which will be provided to 9th-grade students specializing in accounting and finance at four pilot schools: Haydarpaşa Trade High School, Gazimağusa Trade High School, İskele Trade High School, and Güzelyurt Vocational High School.

Önal: “One of our biggest dreams was to make our children part of this program.”

In his opening remarks at the event, Olgun Önal, the President of the North Cyprus Banks Association, recalled the introductory event of the "Accountable Cyprus Financial Literacy" Project held a year ago, stating, "One of our biggest dreams was to make our children part of this program..."

Önal emphasized that financial literacy would be a part of the secondary education curriculum, stating, "This is a small but important and necessary start... I am confident that we will see the positive individual and societal impacts of the new generation growing up financially literate."

Highlighting that children will be happier, more successful, and financially freer with improved financial decision-making skills, Önal, the President of the Banks Association, emphasized, "We attach extraordinary importance to education."

Önal expressed gratitude to Minister of Education Çavuşoğlu for his support of the program from the beginning, extending thanks to both the Minister and the teachers.

Çavuşoğlu: “It is not possible to climb the future steps without learning to save money."

Minister of Education Nazım Çavuşoğlu remarked today that a very different and necessary gathering was taking place, thanking the North Cyprus Banks Association for being instrumental in such an initiative.

Çavuşoğlu emphasized that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) attaches great importance to education and that the Turkish Cypriot people devote significant effort to raising their children. He stated that one of the areas where he believed not enough effort had been made during this process was the preservation and enhancement of the financial means provided to children.

Stating that citizens often try to manage their money through trial and error, Çavuşoğlu cited individuals who have been affected by their actions and recently protested in front of banks and ministries as examples.

Çavuşoğlu drew attention to the necessity for the country to integrate with the world both terminologically and in terms of practical application in budgeting and money management. He emphasized the Ministry's significant responsibility in educating students in this regard.

"Without protecting money, without learning to save money, it is not possible to climb the steps of the future," said Çavuşoğlu, expressing a belief that this program will provide awareness, promotion, and motivation for financial management.

Stating that a certain level of prosperity has been achieved in the country, Çavuşoğlu noted the importance of ensuring the continuation of this prosperity, emphasizing that everyone should educate their child, while the Ministry should educate all children. Çavuşoğlu said, "We believe, we are motivated."

Sharing the goal of starting financial literacy lessons as a pilot project in the accounting departments of vocational high schools in this period, Çavuşoğlu expressed the aim of adding them to the curriculum of all departments in vocational high schools shortly, and eventually to the educational programs of all students. He shared the belief that all students should be raised with financial literacy and skills.

Stressing the importance of directing one's cash value into investments without losing it to create entrepreneurial and investor individuals in the country, Minister Çavuşoğlu stated that they will work with the Banks Association towards this goal, combining the expertise of specialists to continue their path.

Çavuşoğlu stated, "We will raise a better generation. We will reduce the number of people falling victim to bankruptcy and usury. I am confident that as we introduce money and savings, the number of happy people in our country will increase."

The goals of the project were clarified through the presentations held during the event.

At the event, where the handbook for teachers was also distributed, Niyal Öztürk, the project manager on behalf of KMC Consulting, introduced the "Accountable Cyprus Financial Literacy Project" and provided information about the project's goals and activities.

In addition, Salih Sarpten, a member of the Curriculum and Instruction Unit, presented "Financial Literacy Teaching Program." Following the presentations, a workshop on the Financial Literacy Teaching Program was conducted, and certificates were presented to participating teachers.
